Lipid Profile (Cholesterol Testing) The lipid profile is a group of tests that are often ordered together to help determine your risk of heart disease. The results of these tests, in addition to other risk factors, help you and your healthcare provider assess your risk for coronary artery disease and determine what strategies to use to minimize your risk. Your results and other factors will determine if your treatment plan involves life-style changes, such as diet and exercise, or lipid-lowering medications such as statins. The lipid profile typically includes: -Total Cholesterol -High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) — often called good cholesterol -Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-calculated) —often called bad cholesterol -Triglycerides-Very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-calculated) In some circumstances, your healthcare provider may require a Direct LDL test. This measures low density lipoprotein directly rather than through a calculation.
